Coping with Holiday Emotions

The holiday season is here, and you may be thinking . . . Sweets are EVERYWHERE!! I mean, seriously? We walk through giant gingerbread houses at the mall, the scent of peppermint mocha’s on every corner, our children are even supposed to have ‘visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads.’ This time of year continually conjures up so many emotions and the food is closely behind them begging us to give in. And we just survived Thanksgiving! Come on! A little help here, please!! How can I take control of these emotions before they take control of me? It seems like this season can draw us in with all the sights and smells and I quickly spiral out of control and allow my feelings to take over. Here are a few helpful tips to keep in mind that will help you stop and think before you unwillingly fall prey to the needless urge to eat when the emotions arise.

  • Drink a huge glass of water, wait 10 minutes and see if the craving subsides.
  • Eat every few hours to prevent hunger pains.
  • Plan healthy snacks for times when you know you might be vulnerable (get rid of all unhealthy choices).
  • Get active! Change your routine (turn off the tv). Go for a walk. If you distract yourself, the urge will most likely pass.

Emotions will arise during this season, but you were created to be set free. And even though this season may be difficult there are ways to not only survive but strive this holiday season. No matter what emotions are evoked within your heart this Christmas, know that you are loved by your Creator and that He is WITH you~ “Emmanuel, God with us.” He will give you the strength you need to make good healthy choices, not live in regret, but with joyous expectation this holiday season.
